Found in a tiny town square on the isle of Murano in Venice. Why giant? Why an abacus? Murano is the famous island and home of Venetian glassblowers... so that much almost makes sense. We did get to watch the maestros work their magic in a few demonstrations... it takes them about 2 minutes to make a vase, and 40 years to learn.

Ugghh... I'm simultaneously repulsed and fascinated by this abacus. I'm drawn to it because it's a beautiful mechanical computer, but repulsed because it's a disturbingly oversized version of a useful household item. It is as the old one's eye in The Tell-tale Heart... I cannot stop looking, and it is sure to drive me mad in time.
Like with certain gigantic remotes.
